Two things send Minnesota manufacturers looking for help with their systems. Either the business has outgrown spreadsheets and QuickBooks and needs something real, or there is already an ERP and the problem is that it does not talk to anything else, so people retype the same order three times. Norsoft handles both, from Mankato, and we do it in stages so the plant keeps running.

When spreadsheets and QuickBooks stop holding it together

It works until it does not. Scheduling lives in one spreadsheet, inventory in another, and the version everyone trusts is on somebody's desktop. QuickBooks knows what was invoiced but not what actually shipped. Getting a straight answer about a job means asking three people and waiting.

You know you need to move off it, and you are not wrong to be cautious, because the horror stories are about businesses that flipped to a new system over a weekend and could not ship product on Monday. That fear is the reason most companies keep patching for years longer than they should.

We do not start with software. We start by watching how the operation actually runs, who needs which numbers, and where the work breaks down. Then we move you in stages, one piece at a time, with the old system still standing until the new one has proven itself. Data gets migrated and cleaned on the way, so duplicates and gaps get fixed rather than carried forward.

When the ERP will not talk to anything else

The other version of this problem is a company that already bought the system. The order comes into the CRM and someone retypes it into the ERP. Production gets written on paper on the floor and keyed in at the end of the shift. Shipping and accounting each keep their own copy. Every one of those handoffs is a place where numbers drift apart, and the people doing the retyping know it.

We build the connections between those systems so the data moves once. ERP to accounting, e-commerce or customer orders into the ERP, shipping and tracking back out, and shop-floor data up into the reports management actually reads. Where a system has no modern way to connect, we work with what it has rather than telling you to replace it first.

The goal is not a dashboard. The goal is that nobody types the same number twice, and that when two systems disagree you can tell which one is right.

Real projects

A plastics manufacturer, three production lines. We modernized the production system, and downtime dropped by more than 30%. The clean, reliable records that came out of it helped the owners get a better valuation when they sold the company. Read the case study.

An agriculture company with divisions that could not see each other. Every division had its own version of the same customer. We unified them behind one customer record so the whole company could finally see one account. Read the case study.

If you want to know how this goes without the downtime everyone fears, we wrote it up in how to modernize your ERP without shutting down the business.

Deciding between building and buying in the first place? We laid out how we think about it in custom ERP or off the shelf for a small manufacturer.

The specific pieces we build for plants, including scheduling, EDI and Access database replacement, are on our manufacturing page.
