Norsoft is a small custom software firm in Mankato, Minnesota. We have been building business systems since 1987, for companies in southern Minnesota, the Twin Cities, and across the country. You are not handed to an account manager here. A partner leads the work, and when it is finished you own the code.

Generic tools stop working once the business gets real

You started with spreadsheets and off-the-shelf apps, and for a while that was the right call. Now your team spends half its day on workarounds, the same data lives in five places, and pulling a report means somebody's whole morning. You have looked at other products and none of them quite fit, because your business has its own way of doing things and nobody else's software was built around it.

Owning it instead of renting it

The other reason companies call is that they are tired of the subscription. Another seat, another monthly fee, another price increase, and a vendor that can change the product or retire the feature your workflow depends on without asking you.

Custom software is the opposite arrangement. You pay to build it once, you own the source code and the data, and nobody can raise the price on you or take a feature away. It is not the right answer for everything, and we will say so when an off-the-shelf tool would serve you better. We laid out how to decide in custom software versus off the shelf and what it tends to cost in what custom software actually costs.

How the work goes

We start by learning how your business actually runs, not just what you want the software to do but why the work happens the way it does. Then we build in short cycles, and you see working software every two weeks, so you can react to something real instead of approving a document.

You talk to the person making the decisions rather than a project manager relaying messages, and the senior engineer on your project is the same one you met at the start. When we finish, you get the code, the data, and the accounts. If you ever want to take it in-house or hand it to someone else, nothing stops you.

What we have built

A testing platform now used by more than 800 schools, including AI essay grading that turned days of teacher work into under two hours. Read the case study.

The prompt library behind an AI outbound email platform, which has run more than 50 million times without failure. Read the case study.

A field inspection system that replaced paper forms, where crews file reports and photos from the job site and reporting time was cut in half. See the field work.
